Skills USA
Skills USA is a national organization serving students who are enrolled in vocational programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations. Members earn the right to compete in their field of study at the regional, state, and national levels. There is a fee to be in this club. Meetings are held in Mr. Monroe's room when announced.
The Culinary Arts classes of teacher Cynthia Hembree at Roane County High School attended the Tennessee Valley Fair and competition in September. Caleb Armes and Kendra Martin placed third in the Skills USA Cake Decorating Competition.

Cody Guge - Harriman High School, Congratulatons!
Award presented by CTE Director Lance Duff, and sponsored by the Kingston Rotary Club. Cody is a business owner and editor of the HHS Annual Staff.
HHS-OSHS 2009 Disaster Training Drill
Rockwood High School FBLA members recently attended the State Leadership Conference held in Chattanooga. Congratulations to the following students who competed and placed as follows:
- Jacob Kelley, 1st place – Personal Finance
- Sarah Burgess, 2nd place – Business Communications
- Nick Loden, 3rd place – Technology Concepts
- Michelle Edwards, 3rd place – Business Math
- Parker McCullough, 4th place – Introduction to Business
Students who placed 3rd or higher are eligible to compete at the National Leadership Conference to be held in Anaheim, California, in June. Job well done!

Honorary State FFA Degree
Congratulations to the students from MHS that received the Honorary State FFA Degree at the East Tennessee State Degree Judging in February. They are from left to right: Andrew Halcomb, Ethan Carter, Angel Edgemon, and Dillion Willett. The livestock judging team will be competing March the 11th at the East Tennessee Region Competition at UT.

Regional DECA Competition
The following students won their regional DECA competition and will be competing in DECA State Competition March 8-10, 2009, in Nashville, TN.

FBLA Region 7 Conference/Competition
FBLA Region 7 Conference/Competition was held at Roane State Community College in Harriman on Friday, February 13, 2009. Six students from Oliver Springs High School competed and will advance to the state level competition in April.

- Allyson Witt – 1st place Job Interview
- Allyson Witt – 1st place Bill Radcliff Scholarship
Allyson Witt also served as the Region 7 Secretary and participated in the Awards Ceremony at the conference.
These students will attend the FBLA State Conference/Competition in Chattanooga, April 1-4.

All of these students are eligible to attend State Competition, in addition to the 8-10 who are in the running for the Barbara James Service Award. Also there are 4 students eligible for the National Recognition Program. HOSA State Competition is Monday - Wednesday, March 23rd - 25th.

RCHS HOSA students did very well at Regional competition with both teams coming in second place. The Community Awareness Team did a project on Teen Pregnancy. The team consisited of Danielle Breeden, Megan Leffew, Taelor May, and Tori May. The Career Health Display Team consisted of Kirby Beverly and Holly Parkison. Their display was on Nurse Practitioners. Both teams will be attending State competition in Chattanooga March 23-25. Congratulations to both teams for all the hard work!

Scott Mason - Principal, Midway High School

CTE Student Susanna Dewey has been selected as a finalist in the Nationwide Learning National Book Challenge. She is a student at Midway High School. Susanna wrote a book as part of a class assignment and has been selected as a finalist in the Nationwide Learning National Book Challenge. Based on front cover appeal, illustrations, storyline and following correct publishing guidelines, Susanna’s book will go against the best of the rest in the nation with the winner being announced in May.

Great job to FCCLA, they had three 9th graders place in the Flour Muffin Making Contest at the TVA & I Fair. They were :

Ashante' Hall: 6th place
Torie McGowan: 8th place
These students won with about 300 entries.
HHS FCCLA members are reaching out to the community during this holiday season. Members have "adopted" some residents at Marshal Voss Nursing Home. These residents will be receiving Christmas gifts.
HHS FCCLA will also have members at the Roane County Operation REACH on Saturday December 13th. These members will be assisting children in shopping for their families in the county-wide holiday event.
HHS FCCLA will be preparing refreshments for the senior parents at the Financial Aid Night on December 9th.

Hosa Week Recap -
Nov. 2-7 was National HOSA week. RCHS and MHS did activities througout the week to celebrate. Posters were placed throughout the schools educating students on influenza- signs, symptoms, prevention, etc. The students also put up posters re: teen prescription drug abuse. On Wednesday, Life Star flew to RCHS for Health Science Ed. students to tour. On Friday, both RCHS and MHS held a mock disaster presentation for the student body in the gym at both schools. The dsiaster was a tornado and the students demonstrated how a disaster such as this would be handled. Scott Stout from Roane County Emergency Management and First Responders also participated. MHS will be going to Roane Med. Center to job shadow in the month of December.
